Jeffrey Howlett and Don Bailey’s 13 storey modernist block, originally opened in 1963, was set for demolition by the early 1990s.  After extensive campaigning by preservationists the building was retained and architects Daryl Jackson and Peter Hunt were commissioned to undertake an extensive restoration.  Now Heritage Listed, the building also stages a light show of 22,000 LEDs.  A symbol of modernity, Council House is now a celebrated iconic building and a much loved Open House Perth destination.
